Braveheart 8/6/2000 Quarter Horse Gelding Rescued in August 2018 Height- 15.1hh Weight-1100lbs One late evening I was contacted by someone telling me they had to get help for a horse or he would be euthanized in the morning! She stated that he had been injured over the weekend but could not afford medical care, I was told that he had been kicked in the eye by another horse. I told her I would take him but I had to get everyone ready to go to get him the medical attention ASAP, I immediately called our eye specialists at the University of Florida to inform the of the situation and they got me in the next morning. When I picked up Brave the owners would not allow us on property they walked him to the street, this was hard because he couldn’t see out of the eye making him extremely uncomfortable. After leaving it was determined that this injury was well over a week old and was definitely not a kick due to the way he was injured. At UF he received a CT scan confirming that he had been impaled by wood. He ended up losing the eyeball and his eye orbit was also shattered and he lost some bone. He also has special farrier care because he has issues with his hooves but this is maintained. Braveheart healed up with specialized care of daily medical treatments and also rehabilitation to reteach him with his one eye. He excelled and now is just like any other horse! He has even been to horse shows and won ribbons!
